Karachi New Modern Railway Station Set to Open Next Month
Karachi will soon welcome a state-of-the-art railway station, with the inauguration scheduled for September 10. The project is part of Pakistan Railways’ nationwide modernization drive aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and passenger convenience.
Nationwide Upgrades to Transform Rail Services
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi said the new facility aligns with the government’s broader plan to modernize both short- and long-term operations. Recent advancements include full digitization of ticketing, the launch of a real-time train-tracking system, and the installation of ATMs at major stations. Free Wi-Fi is also being introduced at 40 stations across Punjab in partnership with the provincial administration.
A large-scale outsourcing program is underway, expected to conclude by September 30. This will cover a wide range of services, from passenger and freight train operations to the management of guest houses, saloons, hospitals, and schools. Special saloons, previously reserved for officials, will now be available for public booking at affordable rates.
Infrastructure Investments and Service Quality
Cleanliness at major stations is now managed by professional solid waste companies, while food quality is being monitored by provincial food authorities to ensure passenger safety. In addition, the Punjab government has committed Rs. 50 billion to upgrade eight railway routes, while Rs. 250 billion has been allocated for a new double-track and modern signaling system between Lahore and Rawalpindi. Once completed, this will reduce travel time between the two cities to just over two hours.
