For many Muslims planning their journey to the holy sites of Makkah, a common question arises: should one perform Umrah first or Hajj first? With millions traveling each year and flexible visa options now available, the order of these sacred acts of worship is becoming a relevant consideration, especially for first-time pilgrims.
Scholarly Perspectives on Umrah Before Hajj
Islamic scholars generally agree that while both Umrah and Hajj are highly recommended, Hajj is the greater obligation. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, required once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able.
Umrah, though deeply spiritual, is considered a Sunnah (non-obligatory) act by many scholars—though some, including those from the Shafi’i and Hanbali schools, consider it wajib (mandatory).
Performing Umrah first is common, especially for those traveling on combined packages or those arriving well before the Hajj season. It serves as spiritual preparation for Hajj and allows pilgrims to familiarize themselves with the sacred sites. Many scholars also point out that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed Umrah before his Farewell Hajj.
However, scholars also note that if one has the means and opportunity to perform Hajj directly, it should not be delayed in favor of Umrah. Delaying Hajj without a valid reason when one is capable may not be permissible.
Practical Considerations in 2025
Saudi Arabia’s current visa policy allows pilgrims to enter on various visa types, including the Umrah visa and tourist visa. For those planning both rituals in one trip, performing Umrah first is logistically easier since it does not require travel to Mina or Arafat and has fewer time restrictions.
However, scholars caution against over-prioritizing Umrah and postponing Hajj for convenience or cost reasons. According to Sheikh Ibn Baz, “If one has the means for Hajj, it is better to hasten to it, even if Umrah hasn’t been performed before.”
Ultimately, both acts are deeply rewarding. But if choosing between them, most scholars advise fulfilling the obligation of Hajj first if all conditions are met, and then performing Umrah as time and means allow.
