OpenAI is reversing part of its recent model changes, announcing that GPT-4o will be restored for ChatGPT Plus subscribers following a wave of complaints about its replacement, GPT-5.
The decision comes just days after GPT-5 was introduced as the default for all users. While the new model was designed to outperform its predecessor, many users expressed frustration over changes to its behavior and limitations.
GPT-4o Returns, But Only for Paid Users
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the move on social media, acknowledging the company had underestimated how important certain GPT-4o features were to its user base. “We for sure underestimated how much some of the things that people like in GPT-4o matter to them, even if GPT-5 performs better in most ways,” Altman said.
GPT-4o will be available only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who pay $20 per month. The company has not said how long the option will remain, noting it will monitor usage before deciding on the model’s future.
Alongside the reinstatement, OpenAI is doubling GPT-5 rate limits for Plus users and making behind-the-scenes improvements aimed at enhancing the model’s performance. The company says GPT-5 should feel “smarter” starting August 8.
Mixed Reception for GPT-5
The initial rollout of GPT-5 has been met with strong criticism from some users, who describe the model as less helpful than GPT-4o. Complaints include shorter, less detailed responses and the introduction of multiple-choice style outputs, which some say slows down their workflow.
Feedback has been blunt, with some calling GPT-5 “horrible” and “obnoxious,” while others likened it to “an overworked secretary.” These reactions have prompted OpenAI to look at new customization options, including allowing different personalities within the same model.
For now, Plus subscribers will have the choice to continue using GPT-4o, though it may not appear immediately in the model selection menu for everyone. OpenAI has indicated more updates to GPT-5 are on the way as it seeks to balance innovation with user preferences.
