PIA to Resume European Expansion With Direct Flights to Barcelona and Milan
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is preparing to launch direct flights to Barcelona, Spain, and Milan, Italy, marking another step in the national carrier’s return to European skies after years of suspension. The initiative follows directives from Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who urged the airline to focus on destinations with large overseas Pakistani populations.
Strategic Routes for Overseas Communities
Both Barcelona and Milan host significant Pakistani communities, making them high-priority routes in PIA’s European network revival. Milan is particularly notable, as it is home to a large diaspora from Sialkot, Asif’s hometown. The minister emphasized that connecting these cities would not only serve expatriates but also strengthen business and cultural ties between Pakistan and Europe.
Return After Safety Ban Lifted
The renewed push for European operations comes after the United Kingdom removed Pakistan from its air safety list in July. The decision, announced by British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, ended a five-year restriction on Pakistani airlines in British airspace. She credited the collaborative efforts of aviation authorities in both countries and expressed her willingness to fly with Pakistani carriers.
Following the UK’s decision, PIA resumed flights to Manchester, introducing three weekly services operated by Boeing 777 aircraft. The airline’s phased restoration plan includes adding routes from Islamabad and Lahore to London and Birmingham, pending regulatory approvals.
Strengthening International Presence
The planned Barcelona and Milan services are part of PIA’s broader strategy to re-establish itself as a competitive player in the international market. Direct connections to major European hubs are expected to improve travel convenience for the Pakistani diaspora, boost tourism, and facilitate trade links.
While no official start date has been announced, industry observers anticipate the new routes could launch within months, depending on final regulatory clearances.
