As the number of international pilgrims continues to rise, understanding the basic rites of Umrah remains essential. While Umrah is not an obligation like Hajj, it holds deep spiritual significance and is highly recommended in Islam.
For first-time pilgrims and those preparing for the sacred journey, this guide outlines the core practices of Umrah — often referred to as its five main pillars — with supporting references from authentic Hadith.
Understanding the Umrah Rituals
Unlike Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year and involves fewer rituals. The process typically includes Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, shaving or trimming the hair, and performing these acts with intention. These steps are based on the actions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and are deeply rooted in Islamic tradition.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“An Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1773; Sahih Muslim, 1349)
Each act of Umrah has a distinct purpose:

Ihram is the sacred state one enters before crossing the Miqat.

Tawaf involves circumambulating the Kaaba seven times, reflecting submission to Allah.

Sai reenacts the journey of Hajar (AS) between Safa and Marwah in search of water.
